Boneo Buzz: Friday 13th September

Dear Parents and Carers,

Teachers have continued this term to support our school’s direction of providing ongoing reporting through Learning Tasks to provide families with an understanding of how their child is performing in a number of curriculum areas. The Learning Tasks are available for families to access on Compass. This ongoing use of assessment data allows teachers to target future learning for students and work with them in setting appropriate learning goals.

Footy Day Fun

Footy Day is on Friday 20th September! Children are invited to show their team spirit by wearing the colours of their favourite sporting team. Footy Day is always a lot of fun and I do wonder who will win the epic annual lunchtime football match, our Year 6 students or the staff?!

Online Parent Opinion Survey one week to go.

Great news! The Department of Education’s Parent/ Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey will be open online until Friday 20th September 2024. Please support our school by sharing your feedback and opinions by completing the survey before the end of term.

Gaming Monitors – a generous donation

On behalf of our school community, I would like to thank the Summer Foundation for donating 7 x 28inch gaming monitors for our Spark Centre. The Summer Foundation invests in identifying, designing and scaling up great ideas that deliver better housing and living solutions for Australians with disability who need access to 24/7 support.

Our Year 5 and 6 TREC team helped install the monitors and they are now ready for our students to use.

We are so thankful for this generous donation!

Whooping Cough

Whooping cough cases are continuing to increase across Victoria, particularly among school-aged children. Whooping cough is a serious and very contagious respiratory infection. It should be diagnosed by a doctor and treated immediately to lessen the risk of a serious illness and stop the spread to others. The health and safety of our whole school community is paramount. Because of this, I need to convey some important recommendations that aim to protect all of us at Boneo Primary School and ensure that students can return to school as soon as they are well.

Please monitor your child for symptoms of whooping cough. Symptoms of whooping cough include a blocked or runny nose, tiredness, mild fever and severe bouts of coughing, which are often followed by a ‘whooping’ sound on breathing. If your child becomes unwell, please see a doctor for diagnosis and treatment as soon as possible.

Students diagnosed with whooping cough should stay home. To reduce the spread of infection and to protect others within the school community, students diagnosed with whooping cough are recommended not to attend school for 21 days after their cough was first present, or until they have taken a full course of antibiotics prescribed by a doctor (usually a 5-day course). If your child is diagnosed with whooping cough, please contact the school to let us know.

As is our usual procedure, we will contact parents/carers to collect their child if they become unwell at school. If your child develops a cough or you are concerned about their health, please see a doctor. Please keep your child at home while they are unwell.

We encourage all students to practice good hand hygiene, cover their cough and dispose of tissues in a bin. Vaccination is the most important preventive measure against whooping cough as it reduces the risk of infection and severe illness. It is recommended to stay up to date with immunisations, including booster doses. If you are unsure about your child’s vaccination status for whooping cough, please discuss with an immunisation provider, such as your doctor.

I really appreciate your support and thank you for working with us to ensure a speedy return to school for students. For more information about whooping cough, see: Better Health – Whooping Cough.

I hope we can work together to protect the whole school community by following the recommended advice.

Boneo Bucks – Be the Principal for a day

I have had the privilege this week of being supported by some Junior Principals. The principals had a great day visiting classrooms and acknowledging the great work being completed.
