Boneo Buzz August 1st

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thank you so much for the beautiful celebration of Principal’s Day today. Tom Pollett and I were both genuinely humbled by the kindness and thoughtfulness of students, staff and families who together made it an incredibly special occasion. The books we each received were filled with warm, funny and thoughtful messages from students and staff, and brought us so much joy. We feel incredibly lucky to be part of such a supportive and generous school community.

Being principal is a responsibility I don’t take lightly. I am deeply committed to leading our school to achieve success for every student, every day. I remain focused on creating a safe, inclusive and positive learning environment; supporting the wellbeing and growth of every student and staff member; leading with care, integrity and purpose; building strong partnerships with families and the wider community; and celebrating achievements while always striving for improvement.

The heartfelt messages and support I received remind me just how special this community is, and how privileged I am to serve in this role.

Student Led Conferences

We look forward to welcoming families to our 3-Way Conferences on Wednesday 6 August, Tuesday 12 August and Wednesday 13 August. This is a valuable opportunity for students, families and teachers to come together to reflect on progress and discuss goals for Semester Two. If you haven’t already scheduled a time, please do so via COMPASS.

Professional Practice Day – Friday 29 August

On the Professional Practice Day, staff will work on collaboration, assessment and reporting and curriculum development. Students are not required at school on this day.

100 Days of School – Congratulations to Our Preps

Congratulations to our Prep students who celebrated a major milestone — their 100th day of school! They all looked fantastic dressed up and excited for the day of celebration activities. A big thank you to our Prep teaching team for making this such a memorable experience and for the care and creativity you bring to your classrooms every day.

School facilities and the value of Respect

I am asking for your support in reminding children about the importance of respecting our school grounds and equipment. We’ve noticed a concerning shift in care for our school environment, with some students showing a lack of respect for shared spaces. Over the school holidays, we took the time to refresh the student toilets with new paint and necessary repairs, only to discover damage has already occurred. We are working with students to reinforce the message that our school is a shared space that everyone deserves to feel proud of. Your help in reaffirming this message at home would be greatly appreciated.

Indonesian Incursion Years 1 to 3

This week, our Year 1, 2 and 3 students participated in a wonderful incursion celebrating Indonesian song and dance. Students will perform at next week’s assembly, so please join us if you can.

Trivia Night

Our annual trivia night is coming up quickly! Please remember to save the date of Saturday 13th September. Similar to last year, we encourage families to organise tables of 8-10, however we will certainly sell individual tickets for those that require it.

The Resilience Project – What does it mean to have gratitude?

Being grateful means taking the time to notice and appreciate the good things in our lives, both big and small. It’s about focusing on what we have, rather than what we don’t, and recognising the people, moments and experiences that bring us joy or comfort.

Practising gratitude helps children (and adults!), build resilience, improve wellbeing and develop a more positive outlook. It can be as simple as saying thank you, sharing something good about your day or writing down things you’re thankful for. At school, we support students to build this habit through daily reflections and conversations, both planned and unplanned, and we encourage families to continue these moments at home. A simple question like, “What was the best part of your day?” can go a long way in helping children develop a grateful mindset.

I encourage all families to take a moment to watch the Resilience Project video on gratitude, which supports the important wellbeing work we are doing at school. The video offers valuable insights into building resilience, and practical strategies around gratitude that can be easily used at home to support your child’s emotional wellbeing.

We are also in the process of arranging a Parent Information Evening to further explore the key messages of the Resilience Project and how we can work together to support student wellbeing. We look forward to sharing more details with you soon.

NAPLAN 2025

As more detailed NAPLAN data is starting to filter through, I thought I would share some of this with our school community. Below is a table of the percentage of students at our school in Years 3 and 5 who achieved in the ‘strong’ and ‘exceeding’ range for each of the NAPLAN domains. The individual reports were sent home with each child who did the tests earlier this week and included an explanation of the NAPLAN results.

As you can see, compared with ‘like’ schools, state and other schools in our network, we are achieving some fantastic results. This week, staff met to unpack the data more closely to look for trends and compare growth. We were pleased to note that we have seen positive movement with fewer students in the ‘needs attention’ range. A huge congratulations to our teachers and students. This a testament to all their hard work and dedication to their teaching and learning.

Australian Primary Principals Day

Today we acknowledge and celebrate the incredible work of our school Principal, Marija, and Assistant Principal, Tom, on Australian Primary Principals Day.

At Boneo Primary School, we are incredibly fortunate to have such passionate, dedicated, and inspiring leaders who work tirelessly to create a nurturing, inclusive and high-achieving learning environment for all students.

Their vision, care, and unwavering commitment to student wellbeing and educational excellence does not go unnoticed. Whether they’re supporting staff, guiding families, cheering students on at events, or driving school improvement, their leadership makes a difference every single day.

On behalf of our entire school community, we say a heartfelt thank you to Marija and Tom. Your efforts will have a lasting impact on the lives of the children.

Happy Principals Day!

Snapshot of Learning

100 Days of Prep

Year 6 Inquiry launch

For their inquiry launch, the Year 6’s boarded a plane and set off around the world. Students had to figure out where the plane was landing based off aerial footage of the place. Once we landed, students participated in an activity that the country is known for. We landed in Athens and completed a 192m run, in Rio de Janeiro we danced, we escaped from Alcatraz in San Francisco and coloured mandalas in Delhi. Once we made it back to Australia, we brainstormed in Oasis journals all the places we want to visit in the future.
