Boneo Buzz August 15th
Dear Parents and Carers,
Our school is conducting the annual Parent / Caregiver / Guardian Opinion Survey offered by the Department of Education and is seeking your feedback. The survey is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of families’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour and student engagement. The survey is optional, but we encourage and appreciate your participation.
Our school will use the survey results to assist in identifying areas for improvement and professional development needs in the school, to target school planning and improvement strategies.
The Parent / Caregiver / Guardian Opinion Survey will be open online from Monday 18th August to Friday 19th September 2025. Further information will be circulated via Compass early next week. All families are invited to participate in the survey. The survey will be conducted online, will only take 20 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones.
The online survey will be available in English and 10 other languages including Arabic, Greek, Hakha Chin, Hindi, Japanese, Punjabi, Simplified Chinese, Somali, Turkish, and Vietnamese. Resources are also available in additional languages to assist parents / caregivers / guardians who speak a language other than English at home. Please reach out to your child’s teacher, or the school directly for survey guides in your language. Please contact administration if you would like more information.
Book Week 2025 – Book an Adventure
Next week we celebrate Book Week. This year’s theme, Book an Adventure, encourages all children to find adventures in reading. We want to encourage all children to explore stories that excite their imagination. Our Book Week Parade will be held on Friday 22 August as part of our assembly. All students can come to school dressed up as their favourite book character. We invite all families to come along to help celebrate this special event.
Professional Practice Day – Friday 29 August
A reminder that Friday 29 August is a Professional Practice Day for our staff. This means students are not required at school on that day.
Special Lunch Thank You
A big thank you to our wonderful admin staff – Kellie, Amanda and Sue, and our School Council representatives, Josie Pierce and Jess Hennessey who helped organise and run our Special Lunch Day this week. Your time, effort and enthusiasm made the day a great success for our students!

Snapshot of Learning
Northern Star School Chess Championships
On Monday 11th August a team of 22 Boneo students went to Karingal for the Northern Star Primary School Chess Championships Qualifying Event where each student played 7 rounds of chess against students from other schools. There were 154 students in attendance.
The team was: Olive B, Jordie S and Tahnee R (Year 3), Darby M, Phoenix R, Freya D and Gordy H (Year 4), Georgia D, Zeke G and Fletcher R (Year 5) and Luca KJ, Anabelle R, Charlie D, Indi W, James E, Charli B, Ruby F, Sherlock S, Daisy D, Marley H, Casey W and Elias D (Year 6).
Students were awarded 1 point for a win, 0.5 for a draw (stalemate) and 0 for a loss. Students who scored 4.5 points from their 7 matches qualified for the State Open Semi Finals in Term 4. Additionally, any girls who scored 3.5 or above from the 7 rounds qualified for a separate Girls State Finals, also in term 4.
Our highest scoring students were Anabelle R and Sherlock S who both scored 4.0 from their 7 rounds. Whilst none of our students qualified for the Open State Semi’s both Anabelle R and Georgia D qualified for the Girls State Finals, to be held at Box Hill Primary School in Term 4.
We wish both Anabelle R and Georgia D all the best for that event.
Chess was definitely the overall winner on the day though. It was our first experience as a school of going to a chess event like this and the organisation and running of the event was second to none. The students had a fantastic time and the feedback we have received has been excellent, so much so, we will look to make this an annual event for our students to attend in future years.

Year 2 Maths
In Year 2, students have been exploring the concept of money by learning how to add the prices of two items together and calculate change using whole dollar amounts. Students created a supermarket in the classroom and took turns being shop keepers and cashiers. The Year 2’s selected items to purchase, added the totals and worked out the correct change.

RoboCup Junior
A group of talented Boneo Primary School students proudly represented our school at the RoboCup Junior competition. The first ever at Boneo, this exciting event brought together young innovators from across the region to design, build, and program robots to tackle a series of challenges.
Our students showed incredible teamwork, problem-solving skills, and perseverance throughout the day. They worked through technical challenges, adapted their code under time pressure, and supported each other with enthusiasm and positivity.
Congratulations to all our RoboCup Junior participants — you are true tech trailblazers!
