Boneo Buzz 9th October

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope this message finds you well and feeling energised as we begin the final term of 2026. It has certainly been a busy break with many important works taking place across the school. I appreciate the support as we continue to work on the upgrades to the student bathrooms this term.

Term 4 is always an exciting term. Here are some highlights to look forward to:

Prep Transition: We extend a very warm welcome to our 2027 Preps as they begin their primary schooling with us at Boneo Primary School. Our transition program provides opportunities for our new students to become familiar with our school, meet their teachers and fellow students, and begin to feel comfortable and connected in their new learning environment.

Our 2027 Prep Parent/Carer Information Evening will be held on Wednesday 14 October at 5.30pm.

Prep transition sessions will then commence on Wednesday 21 October from 9.00–10.00am, with further sessions on:

· Wednesday 4 November

· Wednesday 18 November

· Wednesday 2 December.

We are looking forward to welcoming our new Prep families to the Boneo Primary School community and beginning this exciting journey together.

Our whole-school Step Up Day will take place on Tuesday 8 December, providing students with an opportunity to spend time in their 2027 classroom and meet their teacher and classmates.

Celebrating the Graduating Class of 2026: We look forward to honouring our Year 6 students this term and celebrating their hard work, growth and dedication as they prepare for the exciting transition to secondary school.

Events: We have a wonderful range of special events and learning experiences taking place throughout Term 4, including our Swimming Program, Oaks Day, Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) Maryborough, Year 5/6 Beach Day, Year 3 and Year 4 Camps, Year 2 Sleepover, sporting events, End-of-Year Celebration Picnic, as well as a range of excursions and incursions.

Planning for 2027

Our teachers will soon begin the process of creating classes for 2027.

We ask families to please let us know if they have a child currently enrolled in Foundation to Year 5 who will be leaving Boneo Primary School at the end of 2026. If this applies to your family, please email the school office at boneo.ps@education.vic.gov.au as soon as possible. This information assists us with our planning for classes, staffing and enrolments for 2027.

If there are specific wellbeing considerations relating to your child that you would like us to take into account when forming classes, you may submit this information in writing to me at marija.pandza@education.vic.gov.au by Friday, 23 October.

The class placement process is designed to consider individual student wellbeing and learning needs, rather than preferences for particular classmates or teachers.

Please note that class placement requests can only be made for genuine wellbeing reasons.

When forming classes, please be assured that we carefully consider each student’s learning needs, wellbeing, social connections and individual circumstances, as well as the need to create balanced and effective learning groups across the school.

Creating balanced classes is a complex process, and once classes are finalised it is extremely difficult to make changes. Even one adjustment can have a flow-on effect that impacts other students and strategic decisions. For this reason, requests received after Friday, 23 October will not be considered.

All teachers at Boneo PS are caring and committed educators, and we are confident that every child will receive a high-quality education, no matter which class they are placed in. Please note that requests for specific teachers cannot be met.

If you have made a placement request in the past that remains relevant, please resubmit this in writing so it can be taken into account.

While we cannot guarantee that a wellbeing request can be accommodated, all requests will be carefully considered alongside the broader needs of the students and classes.

Curriculum Day

A reminder that our upcoming Curriculum Day will be held on Monday 2 November. Students are not required to attend school on this day. Staff will use the day for assessment and reporting to support our ongoing school improvement priorities and teaching and learning programs.

We thank families for making arrangements for their children on this day.

Oaks Day – Celebrating 10 Years!

It’s time to choose your fascinator, gather your friends and get ready for a wonderful day out! This year marks the 10th year of Boneo Primary School’s Oaks Day celebration, a much-loved event that has become a special tradition in our school community.

Snapshot of Learning

District Athletics
On Wednesday 9th September over 40 of our students travelled to the Mornington Athletics Track to represent Boneo in the District Athletics Championships.
In cold and windy conditions, it was very tricky for the hurdlers and high jumpers, but all of our students did themselves and our school proud.
15 of them made it through to the next level (Division) by either winning their event or finishing second in their event and will go on to represent Boneo at the next level which was Division on Wednesday 7th October at Mornington Athletics Track.
Well done to all our District Athletes and good luck to the following students at Division next term: Indi O and Essie W (80m hurdles), Essie W (100m), Buddy C (200m), Maeve D, Layla F and Barney A (800m), Maeve D (1500m), Layla F (discus), Nic V and Archie S (high jump), Jordy M (long jump), Layla F, Brielle T, Ebony R, Essie W (4 x 100m relay), Chet C, Darby M, Thomas R, Jackson C (4 x 100m relay).
Regional Chess Championships
On Tuesday (15th September) 45 of our students attended the Regional Primary School Chess Championships at Karingal Primary School where each of them played 7 rounds of chess against students from various other schools across the region with the aim of qualifying for the 2026 State Primary School Chess Finals.  This event is incredibly well organised and attended and having Boneo students take part each year is very special.
Several of our students scored really well with a few of them very close to making the Open State Semi Finals and many more almost making the Girls State Finals, however, we are delighted to announce that 3 of our girls did make the Girls State Finals with Mei G, Charlotte H and Olive B qualifying for this in October which is an amazing achievement. We wish all three students the best of luck. Olive B was also our only student who qualified for the State Open Semi Finals which again is a truly magnificent effort, so massive well done to her and again all the best from all of us at Boneo.
Division Athletics
On Wednesday 7th October, 15 of our students represented our school in the Division Athletics Championships at Mornington, having qualified through the Districts at the end of last term.
They all did a great job with many experiencing this level of competition for the first time and several achieving new personal bests in their events.
Our students achieved 8 top 3 finishes, which is a new school record!  We also had 5 students make it through to the Regional Championships in 6 events which equalled our school record of students making it through at this level from last year. A magnificent effort from our students!
A huge well done to Essie W (80m hurdles and 100m), Archie S (high jump), Nic V (high jump), Buddy C (200m) and Layla F (800m) for making it through. We wish all 5 students the best of luck in the Regional Championships at Casey Fields on Wednesday 21st October.
Girls Badminton
In recent weeks our girls in years 3 – 6 have been competing in the annual School Badminton Championships. With over 50 entries there were lots of matches and thousands of rallies overall, with several incredible ones. In the end it came down to our final four where Layla F defended her title win from 2025 with another brilliant performance in overcoming a very resilient effort from Abigail M. Ivy A won the 3rd/4th placed play off by edging past Georgie H.
Champion: Layla F
Runner Up: Abigail M
3rd Place: Ivy A
4th Place: Georgie H
Boys Badminton
Our year 3-6 boys also had their annual badminton championship over the past week or so and with almost 80 entries our House Captains did a stellar job helping to umpire many matches over lunchtimes. There were some classic matchups and after many fantastic matches through the earlier rounds we were left with 4 boys to challenge for the title. In the end both Dylan B and Charlie H got the better of Darby M and Walter J respectively in the semi-finals and after a 3 set battle in the final, Dylan B was crowned the champion for 2026. Walter J edged past Darby M to claim 3rd.
Champion: Dylan B
Runner Up: Charlie H
3rd Place: Walter J
4th Place: Darby M
Our top 4 in both the girls’ and boys’ championships received their ribbons at assembly today.
