Boneo Buzz: 6th September
Dear Parents and Guardians,
It gives me great pleasure to announce Ryan Jellie and Liz Dewar, who are involved in the DET Primary Mathematics and Science initiative, have been awarded the Teaching Excellence Award offered by the Australian Mathematical Science Institute (AMSI).
There are ten awards which will be presented at a Presentation Ceremony on Friday 18 October, seven Teaching Excellence Awards, one Outstanding Primary Teacher Award, one Outstanding Secondary Teacher Award and a Mentoring Girls in Mathematics Award. The prize money for the awards is $1000, $5000, $5000 and $10,000 respectively, with an equivalent amount also going to the awardee’s school. All ten awardees will be presented and then the recipients of the Primary, Secondary and Mentoring Awards will be announced on the night.
I know our community will acknowledge this outstanding achievement and we look forward to hearing that Ryan and Liz take out the major Outstanding Primary Teacher Award as well.
The work that we are doing to transform the way we teach and engage our students in Mathematics is already having a significant impact. There is always much debate about the value of NAPLAN but the 2019 Gratten Institute Review of NAPLAN, highlights that a focus on student learning gains is important. I am currently reviewing our NAPLAN data and I am excited to announce that we have outperformed State, Like School and the Region in student gains from Year 3 to Year 5 in Mathematics. Families of students in Year 3 and Year 5 should have received their child’s NAPLAN results today. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you require any support understanding the results.
Oaks Day
It is a very exciting time when our tickets go on sale for Oaks Day.
We have had a very successful ticket release to Boneo parents and guests with tickets selling quickly. Please secure your tickets as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
Our public release is set for Monday 16th September.
The committee is hard at work sourcing donations from local businesses to be used as auction items on the day. They are a small, but incredibly efficient group of volunteers, donating their time to ensure this is a successful fundraising event for our school. We are extremely grateful for their hard work and support.
We are also incredibly fortunate to have access to the stunning ‘National Golf Club’ in Cape Schanck. This venue is a standout, providing us with delicious food, brilliant service and amazing views. To the team at The National we thank you for your ongoing support in helping us to present this beautiful event.
We also wish to acknowledge the following businesses for their generous support.
Ski Camp Action
Last week 2 staff, 18 students and 2 parent volunteers spent six action packed days on Ski Camp at Mt Buller.
These opportunities would not be available to our students without the support of teachers and parent helpers, who generously volunteer their time to assist with our Outdoor Education Programs.
A big Boneo thankyou to Adam Crean and Aaron Simmons for their support on Ski Camp. We hope you enjoyed your time on the mountain.
The students shared their Ski Camp experiences in last week’s edition of the Boneo Buzz.
This week it is video action from the slopes of Mt Buller!
Boneo Athletics Day
It started as a foggy Monday morning, with rain threatening, not ideal for our Boneo Year 3 to 6 Athletics Day.
Thankfully, the weather improved and allowed our athletics event to go ahead. It was an amazing spectacle, with over 170 students dressed in house colours competing in a variety of track and field events.
Mr Cooper wishes to acknowledge, staff, parents and of course our students, for their support in ensuring the success of this event. Our students were wonderful, their enthusiasm. excellent sportsmanship and support for all competitors is to be commended.
The Boneo Athletics Team was selected from this day, with 45 students heading to Ballam Park to compete in the District Athletics event on Wednesday.
District Athletics
On Wednesday, students from Grades 3-6 competed in the District Athletics held at Ballam Park in Frankston.
We were fortunate enough to have beautiful weather and the students enthusiastically participated in a range of track and field events. We were so proud of the way students supported each other throughout the day and celebrated their many outstanding achievements.
Congratulations to the 15 students who qualified to represent Boneo PS at the next stage, Southern Peninsula Division Athletics carnival, to be held early next term.
Well done Team Boneo!
Cassowary Awareness
Congratulations to Josh of Year 2 who is working to raise awareness and funds to support the Cassowary. Josh is consulting with our Junior School Council to organise a free dress day, with all money raised being donated to ‘Rainforest Rescue – Help Save the Cassowaries Habitat’.
Josh has prepared a presentation to highlight the importance of this cause to be shared at assembly on Monday.
Snapshot of Learning this Week
Year 6 Market Day
Thursday’s Year 6 Market was an incredible success! The Year 6 students eagerly displayed their new understanding of Economics by creating a business model including mission statement, slogan, logo and branding, researching, designing and making products, exploring persuasive techniques in advertising and organising their production costs and balance statements using spreadsheets.
The students were overwhelmed by the amount of enthusiasm and support provided by the community on market day, and were thrilled by the experience. We are still calculating the final figures, and are eager to see how much money we raised for our sister school in the Philippines. The final figure will be announced soon.
We wish to thank the parents, friends and wider Boneo community for their support and generosity for such a worthy cause.
