Boneo Buzz: 23rd February

Dear Parents and Carers,

Upcoming School Council Elections

All government schools in Victoria have a School Council. They are legally constituted bodies that are given powers to set the key directions of a school within state-wide guidelines. In doing this, a School Council can directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students. Parents on School Council provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help shape the direction of our school. Parents who become active on School Council find their involvement satisfying and may also find that their children feel a greater sense of belonging and engagement. Each year, approximately half of the School Council retires to allow new members to become involved. To this end, we are now formally calling for nominations for the 2024/2026 Boneo Primary School Council. Membership on the council is for a period of two years and meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month. If you would like to know more about being a councillor, don’t hesitate to call. In 2024, we have 4 parent vacancies and 1 DET vacancy on School Council for a full period of two years.

Nomination forms may be obtained from the school and must be lodged by Friday 8th March.

The annual School Council General meeting is being held on Tuesday 19th March where office bearers will be elected.

Traffic Management

The traffic at peak times can cause concerns for parents and the School. Vic Roads and the Shire have previously supported the school to establish guidelines that ensure safety is paramount at peak times.

The system can work successfully but everyone involved needs to put the safety of the children first and show patience and tolerance if a situation involves a short wait.

Please adhere to the following:

We currently have 2 main entries to park around the oval:

From Boneo Road enter at the tennis court and exit onto Limestone Road. This is one way only at peak times.

  • It is unsafe to double park and add carpark spaces around the tennis court and along the driveways.
  • Please do not allow your child to disembark from your car on the driveway or alongside the car park and have them walk in the path of traffic. This is not a drop off zone. There have been reports of children running behind/between vehicles as they are parking.
  • Keep the permitted parking bays free for  our families and visitors who hold an Accessibility Parking Permit
  • From Limestone Road enter and keep driveway tracks free of vehicles and exit again at Limestone road.
  • Please do not park in the bus zone or in front of the hoppers on Limestone Road.

Conveyance Allowance

The conveyance allowance is a contribution available to families that is to support the costs of transporting children to and from school.

Eligibility

An application on behalf of a student may be submitted if the student is:

  • a Victorian resident.
  • school aged and enrolled (3) three or more days per week at a school; and
  • attending a school/campus located outside the Melbourne metropolitan conveyance boundary.

A student who meets the above requirements may be eligible if they:

  • attend their nearest or designated neighbourhood government school/campus appropriate to their year level, at which admission is permissible, and
  • reside 4.8km or more by the shortest practicable route from the campus attended.
  • whose nearest school is not serviced by a free school bus provided under the School Bus Program

Please contact the school office if you require assistance or have any questions in regard to this program. Application forms are avilable from the school or download from the link below.

Snapshot of Learning

STEM – Year 1 & 2

This week in STEM, the Year 1 and 2 students learnt to make a secure password. The new passphrase we made took 32 septillion years for a computer to crack! We made our password with a capital letter, numbers, and a special character.

Next, we played the ‘Tower of Treasure’ on ‘Be Internet Awesome’ to choose the most secure passwords to protect our personal information.
