Boneo Buzz: 18th October

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are excited to announce that our Boneo Lions Trivia team, Alex, Taye and Alistair, won the first round and now progress through to the finals in two weeks’ time.

Their capacity to perform under pressure, responding to challenging spelling, math and general knowledge questions, within a very short time constraint was impressive

Traffic at peak times can cause concerns for parents and the School. The School has worked with parents and the Shire and will continue to do so to improve traffic flow. Suggestions are always welcomed. Parent discussions have highlighted some recent concerns:
• Dangerous u-turns
• Speed along Boneo Road
• Driving against the traffic around the oval
• Calling children between cars
• Children unsupervised after school at the back of the oval – climbing on the roof of the cricket nets
• Lack of consideration and impatience by some drivers
The system can work successfully, but everyone involved needs to put the safety of the children first and show patience and tolerance if a situation involves a short wait.
The following procedures in place are aimed to support traffic flow and maintain safety:

  • One way traffic flow around the oval starting at Boneo Road and exiting at Limestone Road
  • 10km speed limit around the oval
  • Refrain from double parking around the tennis court
  • Refrain from parking and double parking in the bus zone

Thank you for your assistance and cooperation.

Please note:

Due to a whole school dance incursion on Monday, we will not be holding our whole school assembly. The next assembly will be on Monday 28th October.

There has also been a change of date made to our end of year concert. This change was made due to a community event clash and we wanted to ensure all students and families could attend our Concert. The Boneo End of Year Concert is on Thursday 5th December.

Oaks Day

We still have some ticket availability for our Oaks Day event. These tickets are limited, so if you are interested please contact the office as soon as possible.

The community support for this event continues to grow with our office being flooded with donations for our auctions and raffles. Each year we are amazed by the overwhelming generosity shown to us by the extended community.

This event is a reflection of our wonderful community and the spirit that makes Boneo special.

A very big Boneo thankyou to the following sponsors:

Boneo Tennis Club – Grand Re-opening

The Boneo Tennis Club warmly invites the Boneo Primary School community to attend their upcoming ‘Grand Club Re-opening’ following recent upgrades to their facilities.

There will be a free BBQ, jumping castle, face painting and plenty of tennis activities for all.

Boneo Christmas Hampers

To the Boneo Community,

This year we have the privilege in providing hampers to families in need.

Our school is not one to shy away from helping people in the local community. During the next 2 months I will be placing a cardboard box in each classroom for students to put food in that will go towards the making of the hampers.

Parents, we really need your help with this!

Next time you do your weekly shopping it would greatly appreciated if you could buy a non perishable item to be donated to your child’s class box, so they can be a part of this great cause. Each student that takes part in this will receive a Boneo Buck!

We don’t want any family to struggle this year and it would be amazing for everyone to be involved.

Many thanks,

Josh Watkins

Snapshot of Learning this Week

Year 3 – Sorrento Excursion

The Grade 3 and 4 students have been learning about Australian history this term, focusing on the arrival of European settlers. We have been learning about explorers, the First Fleet, the establishment of penal colonies and what life was like during these times. Understanding the living conditions of these early settlers has also been a focus, comparing and contrasting what life was like then to now. The children have learnt about the indigenous people of Australia.

On Wednesday this week, the Grade 3 students visited Sorrento Museum and Collins Settlement, Sullivan Bay. The Grade 4 students are attending next Wednesday. The Grade 3 trip was fantastic.

The Museum showcased memorabilia from this time, including clothing, housing, entertainment, food and cleaning items. It provided a wealth of information about the history of our local community. Many of the buildings constructed during this time still remain in Sorrento. Interestingly, many of the names of our local streets reflect significant people or places of this time.

Our visit to Collins settlement gave us an understanding about the living conditions at this time, life was tough. We learnt about the treacherous conditions making the journey to Australia. A memorial plaque pays tribute to the convicts that settled at Sullivan’s Bay. Children as young as nine were transported to Australia without their family for petty crimes.

The excursion was invaluable for both students and teachers. Everyone came away with a deeper understanding of Australian and local history.
