Boneo Buzz: 14th February

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Over 120 parents attended our Information Evening on Wednesday. Your participation in your child’s education and your child’s school make a tremendous difference in the quality of our program. Thank you for making our teachers feel appreciated. Boneo Primary is lucky to have such hardworking and wonderful teachers, who ‘go above and beyond’ for our student’s everyday! If you were unable to attend, staff have placed all PowerPoint presentations and handouts on Class Compass pages for easy access.

The staff and I greatly appreciate all that you contribute to the ongoing success of our wonderful school. We look forward to working together with you this year!

Upcoming School Council Elections

All government schools in Victoria have a School Council. They are legally constituted bodies that are given powers to set the key directions of a school within state-wide guidelines. In doing this, a School Council is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students. Parents on School Council provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help shape the direction of our school. Parents who become active on School Council find their involvement satisfying in itself and may also find that their children feel a greater sense of belonging and engagement. Each year, approximately half of the School Council retires to allow new members to become involved. To this end, we are now formally calling for nominations for the 2020/2021 Boneo Primary School Council. Membership on the council is for a period of two years and meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month. If you would like to know more about being a councillor, don’t hesitate to give me a call. In 2020, we have 6 parent vacancies and 1 DET vacancy on School Council for a full period of two years.

Online Safety

I want to remind parents to be hyper vigilant and know what children are doing online. Research shows 81% of parents hand their child an internet-connected device by the age of 4, so active parental engagement and oversight of a child’s online activities is critical from the start, to help ensure they are prepared for what they may encounter. As young people often do not have the maturity or judgement to cope with confronting content online, it’s important to guide and instil critical reasoning skills, so they are aware that not everything they see or receive online is real.

We encourage parents to co-view, co-play, ask questions about the games and apps children are using, and let them know you are there to support them if they are upset or uncomfortable about anything they see online.

Five top tips to help limit your child’s exposure to harmful content online:

  • Engage in your child’s online activities – ask what apps, sites and games they’re using and make sure they’re age-appropriate
  • Use parental controls on devices to help limit what your child is exposed to
  • Let them know not everything they see online is real or true.
  • Help them report and block upsetting content they see on social media sites or apps.
  • Let them know they can come to you about anything upsetting they see online, and to contact Kids Helpline if they need further support.
  • Keep devices out of bedrooms

Snapshot of Learning this Week

Boneo Swim Carnival

We feel so blessed to have such supportive parents as we move to involve all students in House events. In 2019, 46 students participated in our swimming carnival. l am proud to announce that 160 students participated in 2020.

It was heartwarming to see children with a growth mindset persisting to achieve their personal best. Additionally, the children who were unable to swim, really harnessed the spirit of the event by cheering for the competitors.

On Monday, the overall place-getters will receive their ribbon at assembly. Please come and join us to acknowledge these students.

Lunch Time Activities

This year, we have introduced activities and clubs at lunch time. Students are able to participate in tennis, running club, basketball, craft, yoga, dance and sport.

Year 6 students are also coordinating a sport equipment borrowing system during these breaks.
